Location: Wakefield, Nelson, South Island
Features/characteristics: large yellow light
Description:
Sky clear and dark. Duration of sighting approximately one and a half minutes.
The witness was walking to his car when he noticed a bright light moving through the sky. It was travelling north over Wakefield when he first saw it, and he judged its altitude to be about 7 to 800 feet, moving slowly. He tapped on the bedroom window to wake his wife and she also witnessed the bright yellow light. They continued to watch the light until it was obscured from view. The two witnesses judged the bright light to be about the size of a car.
Date: Saturday 1 April 2017
Time: midnight
Location: Upper Riccarton, Christchurch, South Island
Features/characteristics: 2 red objects, distinct shapes
Description:
Warm, still evening; no wind; clear visibility. Duration of sighting 7 seconds.
The witness and his wife had just had arrived home and were standing in their driveway admiring the Milky Way, when two objects passed overhead in formation, one slightly behind the other. They were dark red and not particularly bright, and shaped similar to the Spark Logo (star-like). However the width of each object was greater than the length, and they appeared to have four winglets. They tracked across the sky from east to west, very fast. The witness estimated that they took seven seconds to go from roughly overhead to around 40° above the horizon, when they were obscured from view behind rooflines. The witness thinks they converged and crossed over each other’s track just before becoming obscured.
They were completely silent and had no flashing lights.
The witnesses considered birds, satellites, planes, and drones as possible explanations, but discounted all of these as they did not match the characteristics of what they had observed
Date: Wednesday 18 January 2017
Time: 5.40am
Location: Wakefield, Tasman, Nelson, South Island
Features/characteristics: bright yellow light
Description:
Duration of sighting approx 10-15 seconds.
The witness was walking out his front gate to go to work early in the morning when he observed a large yellow object/light travelling east to west at an estimated altitude of 7 to 800 feet. Its speed was slow, estimated at 40 km an hour. The witness watched as the object/light moved away from him, travelling horizontally in a straight line. He estimated the object’s size to be at least, as big as a car. He was not able to discern any sound at all from the object and there were no blinking lights. The witness remained watching the object/light until it passed into cloud.
