Date: March 2020
Time: 9 pm
Location: Helensville, Northland, North Island
Features/characteristics: intense white light
Description:
Calm clear night; duration of sighting several seconds.
The two witnesses, a Police File Manager, and a former police officer/Airfield Officer, observed a “brilliant, extremely intense round white light flash, with a rough outline as it flashed.”
The witnesses are familiar with the landing lights of aircraft passing over en route to Auckland International Airport, but they described this light as “a lot bigger than an aircraft coming in; it was approximately at 500 m altitude.” The light headed west to east at high speed, leaving a long tail; there was no sound.
