New Zealand UFO/UAP Sightings 2025

All sightings, photographs, drawings and articles are © Ufocus NZ.

The extent of our investigation and analysis of sighting reports is dependent upon the data received, and the length of time elapsed between the sighting event and the receipt of a report.  If applicable, additional comments are made at the bottom of a report.

Date: Saturday, 26 April, 2025

Time: 5.20 am

Location: Rainbow Station, Marlborough, South Island

Features/characteristics: ‘ruler-like’ object and small orb

Description:

Duration of sighting approx. two minutes. Clear weather conditions, light breeze. Slight orange tint on horizon in eastern sky before sunrise.

The witness had positioned his car to observe the supermoon event. He looked up from working on his phone to see a stationary cascading white light effect in the sky, within his previously clear view of the valley ahead and the moon.  The object looked like a small ruler with a repeating cascading light pattern and was at an estimate altitude of 800 m and around 10 km distant.

Approximately 45-90 seconds into this event he watched as a small orb travelled from ground level at the speed of a light aircraft before slowing and connecting with the cascading light-object.  The orb and object remained stationary a further 20 seconds or so, before they departed at immense speed into the distance away from the observer’s position, with an effect much like a tail-light on a top fuel dragster. The witness felt slight euphoria after the unusual event, but described this as having seen remarkable technology, rather than a spiritual feeling.

Date: Thursday, 24 April

Time: 11.15 pm onwards

Location:  Lincoln, Canterbury, South Island

Features/characteristics: large ‘wine bottle-shaped’ object; bright lights

Description:

Duration of sighting 11.15 pm – 12.07 am, and briefly on 25 April around 8.30 pm.  Clear conditions; no wind.

The witnesses, husband and wife, reported:

“There seemed to be two phenomena – the first was when the woman noticed there were lights in the scrubland nearby.  The lights were bobbling around seemingly on the land and then lifted up and went over some blue gum trees that would be 30 to 40m high. There was one very strong, very bright light, and there seemed to be a couple of smaller lights blinking around it, and I thought they looked to be the size of drones, but I could not hear motors, and I should have been able to hear that given the closeness and it being a still night.  Briefly, a bright light flicked my way, and I thought someone was shining a torch at me.”

“The big light lifted up and took off over the 30 – 40m trees and headed east towards the village, and at this point, I got my husband up to come out with me. No sooner had he come outside than this big object came up over our roof and very slowly went over us and our property.   It took 45 seconds to travel about 50m.  We have security footage showing us spotting it and our heads turning watching it moving east to west, until it went out of our sight.  Unfortunately, the footage is only of the yard and not into the sky. It moved towards the trees again and we lost sight of it … in fact, we were a little freaked out and wanted to go inside!”

“Because it was so close, we got a good look at it and compared it with a family boat that is 7 m long.  This object was much bigger, and we estimate it to have been about 10m long and 8, wide, and dart-shaped but curved. The nearest shape we can think of is an old-fashioned ‘Mateus Rose’ wine bottle, slightly flattened and with a shorter cork end. The front had a strong light, and there were red and white lights around the middle and across the rear of the object. It was perhaps only 15-18m from us – very close.”

The husband thought the object had a bit of a ‘nose’ to it and drew it that way. The wife thought it was more of a bright light at the very front that gave the impression of a point. The object had a lot of red and white lights dotted down the middle of the side they could see, and it had a large oval rear with larger red and white lights.  They had a long time watching the back as it glided very smoothly and steadily across above their house and away from them. It made a low-pitched hum.  There was no sense of a motor, helicopter blades, no rotor, no drone rotor, etc. One witness thought the surface of the object was a ‘grey fish’ sort of colour, while the other thought it was green.  They both agreed the colour appeared dark and the lights stood out.
